๐ One Password, One Breach, Many Victims |
||
|
Many people use the same password for multiple online accounts because it's easier to remember. ๐ Unfortunately, criminals know this and actively exploit it. If just one website or online service suffers a data breach, your password could end up in criminal hands. If you've used the same password elsewhere, criminals may try it on: ๐ง Email accounts ๐ฆ Online banking ๐ Shopping websites ๐ฑ Social media accounts โ๏ธ Cloud storage ๐ฎ Gaming accounts And because many people reuse passwords, it often works. โ ๏ธ How criminals use stolen passwords Imagine this: A shopping website you used years ago suffers a data breach. You may never even realise it happened. A criminal obtains your email address and password from that breach and then tries the same details on other popular websites. If you've reused that password elsewhere, they may gain access to multiple accounts within minutes. ๐ They don't hack you. ๐ They simply sign in using a password you've used before. This is known as "credential stuffing" and it is one of the most common ways criminals gain access to online accounts. ๐จ What could happen? A criminal could: โข Read your emails โข Reset passwords on other accounts โข Access saved payment details โข Take over social media profiles โข Impersonate you โข Steal personal information โข Make online purchases In some cases, one reused password can lead to multiple accounts being compromised. โ How to stay safe โ๏ธ Use a different password for every important account Especially for: โข Email โข Banking โข Shopping accounts โข Social media โ๏ธ Create longer passwords Use three random words or a strong passphrase that is difficult to guess. โ๏ธ Use a password manager A password manager can create and safely store strong, unique passwords for all your accounts. โ๏ธ Turn on Two-Step Verification (2SV) Even if someone discovers your password, they may still be unable to access your account. ๐ง A simple way to think about it Using the same password everywhere is like using the same key for your: ๐ House ๐ Car ๐ข Workplace ๐ฆ Shed If someone copies that key, they can open everything. Unique passwords help ensure that a problem with one account doesn't become a problem with all of them. ๐ข Key message โOne password stolen should not mean every account lost.โ โ If you think one of your passwords has been compromised Change it immediately. If you've used that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Enable Two-Step Verification where available. Monitor your accounts for unusual activity. If you are the victim of Fraud or Cybercrime ๐ Inform Report Fraud online here - UK's Home for Reporting Cyber Crime & Fraud - Report Fraud โ๏ธ Or telephone Report Fraud on - 0300 123 2040. โ๏ธ If you have lost money or shared financial details, contact your bank immediately by calling 159. ๐ค Please share this advice with family, friends and anyone who uses online services. Taking a few minutes to create unique passwords today could prevent a significant financial loss and a great deal of stress tomorrow. | ||
